This motivational story shares Helen’s experience of returning home after a year in America on a tennis scholarship. Her dreams of playing professional tennis are shattered by the shocking diagnosis of kidney failure at the age of 20.
Helen has to dig deep to cope with challenging dialysis treatment and learn to live with lifelong kidney disease. She undergoes more than 20 surgeries in four years and it is only thanks to her Mom’s generous donation of a kidney in 1992 that her life is saved and she is able to rebuild her dreams.
The story follows Helen’s journey of living with kidney failure. It displays her determination and fighting spirit, finding ultimate success in sport and life, including fulfilment through successful charity fundraising. Helen shares the lessons she learnt and her message will inspire you to make your own life count. It is one of hope, humour and candid honesty.

I am on dialysis, and this morning, on my way to the hospital for ‘machine time’, my soon-to-be living donor handed me a copy of your book. I started reading it as dialysis commenced and completed it a few hours after treatment had ended.
You owe me a couple of boxes of tissues, as I wept my way through most of your story. I have, in my past, been very self-centred and you have inspired me to learn public speaking and to train for and run a marathon to raise funds for people who are suffering.
I have no words that could adequately describe how much your book has altered my perception of my condition, my forthcoming transplant and the posy-transplant future.
You are a shining light in my consciousness. Thank you.
With much love and infinite gratitude,
Wow … what a truly amazing life story of dreams, heartache, courage and sheer determination. I could not put this book down; I read it through the night often with tears in my eyes. This woman, together with the support of her incredible family, has overcome so much and has really made a difference and lived her ‘second life’ to the fullest. Helen, you can add ‘book writer’ to your many talents that you have – this book was so, so well written! A definite must-read for sure.
It has been a tremendous honour and great privilege to help Helen, through coaching, to achieve her book publication goal and to support her on her journey of sharing her story to help others. I applaud her inspirational determination to succeed whatever the challenge and I know the message of her book will help others to overcome adversity and go for whatever it is they want out of their lives.
